Minnesota should expect both strong investment in public education and strong results for students. Unfortunately despite increased spending, results have been trending in the wrong direction in Minnesota schools. Statewide assessments are only one measure, but they are an important signal that too many students are not yet meeting grade-level expectations in reading and math.
We need to:
• Keep reading, writing and math fundamentals at the center of state education policy.
• Support evidence-based literacy instruction and transparent measures of student progress.
• Give local districts flexibility to meet student needs instead of layering on unnecessary administrative requirements.
• Strengthen career and technical education, skilled-trades pathways and partnerships with employers.
• Support safe learning environments and high expectations for every student.
• Give districts flexibility - with oversight - on how they spend certain state dollars, instead of tying funding to a list of mandates for every district.
